Many people wonder how best to progress their career in health and safety. In the UK the largest body representing Health & Safety Professionals is the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH for short).

There are several membership grades, the first one requiring (amongst other things) a qualification is that of Tech IOSH. Membership at this level has various other boxes to tick which we will discuss with you, but one of which is a qualification at a certain level, which on successfully completing our learning programmes this box is ticked.

Next level up is CERT IOSH, which again has various boxes to tick, but also qualification at a certain level is the key pre-requisite of obtaining this membership grade. Again, which on successfully completing our learning programmes this box is ticked

At the top of the tree there is Chartered Membership, or CMIOSH (one can also be a fellow of IOSH, CFIOSH, but this grade is not for this webpage). CMIOSH status gives access to the widest range of work and the most rewarding jobs.

The Main Advantages of the NVQ Learning Route: ​

• No pressure of formal examination, all learning is unit submission based, which can be revised as many times as you like
• Flexible workplace based study – earn while you learn
• Continuous enrolment, start any time – monthly inductions
• The course is not a formal classroom based courses
• Designed to be taken at a pace that suits your needs, many learners take about six months to a year to complete or longer. The courses are outcome-based with no fixed learning programme, allowing flexibility of delivery to meet your individual needs.
• Equivalent to an academic qualification – viewed by IOSH the same way as a NEBOSH Certificate or a NEBOSH Diploma is

To obtain either Occupational Health and Safety course qualification, you must complete various numbers of mandatory & optional units, dependent on whether you have/are undertaking the level 3 or level 6 qualification.

A Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (via Pro Qual)

This is equivalent in learning level to the NEBOSH General Certificate, and upon successful completion, like the NEBOSH Certificate, provided you have the other pre-requisites needed, you will be able to apply to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) to become a technician level member (Tech IOSH). If you have no prior health & safety qualifications, or health and safety qualifications at a basic level, then this is for you. Assisted online by our assessor throughout.

A Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (via Pro Qual)

The NVQ Health & Safety Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a work-based qualification suitable for those in a health and safety management role, which recognises a person’s competence using on the job performance for assessment, rather than relying on examinations. You will use an online system to help you with the process of putting together your portfolio and will be assisted online by a CMIOSH assessor throughout.
